Three Tips For Using a Wood Turning Lathe




If you learn the right way to use a wood turning lathe, it will soon become one of your favorite tools. Here are three important tips for using a lathe. They're applicable to all projects and you should keep them in mind whether you're turning a big, thick table leg or a delicate candlestick.





Good Projects Start with Good Wood





Before you even think of starting a wood turning lathe project, double-check the quality of the wood you're using. Using the right kind of wood is important, but that only one consideration.





You need to check the wood carefully to be certain it's the right size. Remember, you may lose a portion of the piece's top and bottom. That means you'll want to use pieces that are slightly longer than the project requires. There's nothing more frustrating than turning a great piece and then finding that you just can't use it.





You'll also want to inspect the wood carefully for quality. If you find deep scratches or cracks in your wood, you may end up with a final piece that will fall short of your quality standards. Check your wood for appearance, as well. Some pieces may have slightly discolored areas or grain patterns that just won't look right when you're done.





Using the Right Tool for the Job





A particular project may call for the use of a wood turning lathe, but that doesn't mean that any lathe will do. This fact becomes quite clear when you witness someone "biting off more than he or she can chew" by trying to handle an oversized piece of wood in a smaller lathe.





A pen lathe is great for a number of different jobs, but it won't be up to task for bigger projects. Likewise, smaller lathes may offer more precision and control than larger ones, making them ideal for small projects. Step back and evaluate both your project and your equipment. Are they really a good match? You should be able to answer that question in the affirmative without hesitation.





Your Hands and Eyes are Worth More than a Great Table





Every single project involving a wood turning lathe is serious. That's because you're using powerful equipment that has the potential of hurting you if not used correctly. "Safety first" may seem like a worn-out cliche, but it bears repeating when it comes to lathe work.





Be certain your wood is properly placed and is snugly fitted into the lathe. Use all necessary protective gear. Never touch a moving piece of wood with your hands--it only takes a few moments for the machine to come to stop. Don't remove a piece of wood until you've flipped the power switch to "off."





You may be excited to finish your project in record time, but it doesn't make sense to trade your safety and well-being to save a few minutes. Take the time and care to keep yourself safe.

Using Power Tools For Easy Work




In almost any variety of home crafting, power tools make a noticeable difference - most jobs can be done easier, faster, and with more precision than by hand. There are two general categories of power tools - portable and bench-mounted.





Portable Power Tools





Portable tools are not as accurate as bench tools, but their convenience and mobility may easily justify their purchase.





Electric drill is the most versatile of all portable power tools. Hole-drilling is its regular duty, but attachments are available for sanding, polishing, grinding, routing, turning, sawing, and many other jobs. Check into the assortment of attachments - you will probably put an electric drill at the top of your tool shopping list.





Electric handsaw is very useful for cutting large sheets of plywood and lengths of standard-sized lumber. It's easy to handle and maneuver - you simply guide the saw along the line you're cutting. Blade diameters range from 4½ to 12 inches. A special table is available for converting a power handsaw into a table saw.





Saber saw is a popular tool because of its ability to make both straight and intricately-curved cuts - and it is priced relatively low. It will cut wood up to 2 inches thick, and blades are available for cutting sheet metal, plastic, and rubber. Attachments include a rip guide and an angle base. You can easily make cut-outs or do key-hole work by riding the saw on the tip of its "shoe" and slowly lowering it to cut through.





A router makes smooth, groove-type cuts. It is very handy for making joints - including rabbet, dado, mortise-and-tenon, and dovetail - and it's also useful for beading and inlaying. Attachments are available for quick conversion into a saber saw, orbital sander, or electric plane.





Orbital sander has a sanding pad that moves in a tiny circle, allowing you to sand either with or across the wood grain. You can do both heavy and finish sanding, depending upon the coarseness of the abrasive paper you attach.





Vibrator, or reciprocating sander, can also be used for either heavy-duty or fine finishing work (depending upon the abrasive) but has a pad that moves back and forth in a straight line. Belt sander must be kept moving with the grain at all times, as the sanding belt moves in only in one direction. It is useful for sanding large, flat surfaces where you want to remove large quantities of wood rapidly.





Bench-Type Power Tools





For furniture making, there are two bench-type power tools commonly found in the home shop; the table saw and the drill press. The lathe is very handy for turning furniture legs and round pieces, and the jointer precisely smooth edges and faces of boards, but most craftsmen consider both to be more luxury than necessary. The table saw is extremely useful for accurately cutting both large and small pieces of wood. It is usually equipped with a ripping fence for long, accurate cuts, and a miter gauge for precise cutting of ends and various angles in shorter pieces. Several accessories are available for special cuts and particular shaping jobs.





Drill press is designed for drilling accurate, uniform holes. Most presses are equipped with stops for easy control of angle and depth. For projects that require a lot of hole-drilling, a drill press is invaluable. The machine is also handy for mortising and - with attachments - shaping, routing, and drum sanding.


Using the Wood Lathe - Design to Final Product




Having a workshop project that you want to take from the design stages to final product may include a lot of factors. One of the most important factors is having the correct tools for the job. This article will talk about how to incorporate usages of the wood lathe and when to use this machine with your woodworking projects.





The wood lathe is a great machine for creating projects that require symmetry along a center line. Examples can include bedroom furniture, lounge furniture, vases, bowls, and battens. Having good drawings to work from is nothing, if the execution is not up to standard. Make sure you have the right chisels and wood turning tools to get the best effect. It is often worth making the investment on good wood chisels, as this will save on cost and a lot of time in the long run.

The Benefits of Using a Lathe Machine




The lathe machine tool shapes an object by cutting, sanding, drilling or formation with tool by rotating the object on its axis. Generally a lathe machine is used to give shape to workpieces and has many parts. Most of them are feed service lever, back gear level, head stock, face plate, tool post, compound rest, saddle, clutch knob and half nut lever. Each and every part of the machine is very important and performs very complicated functions. The person who operates the machine is called turner. It fully depends on the experienced turner to do a great job which demands huge level of attention.





There are different types of lathe machines which are used for wood working, metal working, glass working, metal spinning, ornamental turning, shaping, rotary & watchmaking. Every type of lathe is used for specific function. For example, a steel workshop uses metal working lathes & a carpentry workshop uses wood working ones. A Lathe machine can be used to shape different objects. Besides, a solid round bar can be shaped to a bolt by making specific thread. It can be used for complicated drilling where it's hard in the general drilling machine and can drill at specific angles by setting degrees.





Boring is the another function of lathe machine which is used to make holes inside an object. It can cut 6 inches of hole easily by using sharp tools. There are two types of tools mostly used for cutting solid material like M.S. cutting tool & diamond cutting tool. These two kinds of tools are used for fine tuning an object. The lathe object is used to sharpen is an alloy which is formed by adding some materials to harden it. Lathing concept has been formed since 1300(B.C) to the present. During this time it had evolved for different functions especially in mechanical works, carpentry works, glass works and steel fabrication where it's contribution has been very essential.
